Basic Difference between Adhesive Tapes and Sealants

in Environment

Adhesive tapes and sealants are not the same as they are thought to be! Since both are considered to have adhesive properties, but the fact tells something different. No doubt that they are basically used for the same purpose, but the function performed by each one of them, is a bit different. While adhesive tapes are used for joining assembles, sealants are used to seal off the joining edges. While the former has wide applications, the latter is usually confined to construction sites. The former is approachable to a large number of purposes, but the latter is confined to particular applications.

Sealants are to seal off, adhesives are for bonding!

Many a time people get confused with “binding” and “sealing”. They are presumed to be the same. But it isn’t like this. Adhesives are used to bind two surfaces together in a uniform way and sealants are used to seal the gap between two different surfaces. Here lies the big difference! For example adhesives can be used to fix two broken glass pieces, but not a sealant. A sealant can be used to seal off a hole in a wooden door, but not an adhesive tape. In simple words, adhesive tapes are used as repairing agents, while sealants are used as a substitute.

The visible and invisible differences

  • One of the basic physical properties of these is that adhesives are usually in the form of tapes or sticky liquids while sealants are semi liquids or liquids.
  • Since adhesive tapes are used for bonding two materials strongly, there are certain standardizations for its preparation, while there are no stringent regulations for the preparation of sealants.
  • While both have adhesive properties, adhesive tapes contribute a lot to the structural stability rather than sealants, which only work for cutting off the incoming or outgoing of any particular substrate.
  • Adhesives have a greater tensile strength than sealants. Whereas sealants are low in their tensile strength but have good flexibility.
  • One of the major disadvantages of using sealant is its chemical and environmental vulnerability. Adhesives have a backing material which protects the adhesion from outer environment, but the sealants are exposed and that too with a large surface area of exposure.
  • These are widely used and applied and have a number of varieties available in the market, but sealants have limited usage.
